Paul Oakenfold, 1.10.09

New Year. New set list. Well, almost. Oakenfold was back on January 10 and mixing it up a bit from the previous months. Die-hard Perfecto fans and regulars had been murmuring about hearing the same tracks week after week. Some folks even played “predict the set list” and took notes of song order on their Blackberry. Yet, when dance music fans in Vegas go to a different venue on a Saturday, we’re usually disappointed and ultimately head back over to Rain in time to hear the “Perfecto Anthem.”

This particular evening, a group of friends and I went to a nearby casino/hotel to hear a few semi-famous DJs spin. We were sorely disappointed and our noses wrinkled in disgust after only ten minutes. We also missed the free glowsticks and the one short, but hot and muscular dude that’s painted silver and hangs by a rope from Rain’s ceiling. We unanimously agreed Perfecto was calling us and we quickly departed from our original itinerary.

So back to the new year, new set. Oakie was mixing it up quite a bit on the tenth and as soon as we walked through the tunnel, we could sense a different renewed energy. Regulars were smiling and saying, “He’s spinning something new!” Not that tourists would know, or the occasional clubgoer, but the burgeoning Perfecto culture was stoked at the new tracks being mixed in with staple songs for the electronic-dance-music novices in the crowd. I’m still holding out a little bit of hope he’ll somehow work in “Faster Kill Pussycat” at some point. That’d be interesting.
